The old sacristan and the Pope

In Rome, Bishop Roche laid his people’s homage before Pope Pius XI, who sent mementoes to the most deserving Christians of Tuticorin. To the old sacristan of Vadakenkoulam — brother of a vicar general and of a convent superior, still at eighty-two serving the church — went the Bene Merenti medal. The Jesuits’ magazine printed his years and his office, not his name. In the same audience the Pope spoke of the bishop’s own family: “Oh! the beautiful family,” he said; “two priests and a bishop. What a happy mother!” — and sent a gold rosary to Bishop Roche’s mother.
