Fr Grégoire dies at sea
He did not long outlive the church. “What the building of this sanctuary cost him in cares and fatigues, God alone knows,” wrote his chronicler. Sent home on his doctors’ advice, Fr Grégoire never reached the end of the voyage: he died in the crossing of the Red Sea, anointed by Fr Victor Delpech. His two chroniclers agree on the day and differ only on the year: both put his death on 19 September — Auguste Jean in 1873, Dessal in 1875. He had been thirty years a missionary.

What this source establishes
Dessal gives 19 September 1875 — the same day of the same month, two years later. He also supplies "on his doctors' advice", where Auguste Jean says it was his superiors' invitation.
