The whole village came and wept

The catechist Madurendira Annaviyar climbed to the altar and wiped the tears, but they would not stop; then the church bell was rung and the whole village hurried in at that unusual hour. Gazing on the marvel, the people wept and sang the old penitential chants, "Parce Domine, parce populo tuo" ("Spare, O Lord, spare Your people"), until at last the statue returned to its ordinary look.
