St Devasahayam baptised here
On 14 May 1745, after nine months of instruction, Fr Buttari baptised Neelakanta Pillai, a Nair officer from the court of Travancore, in the Holy Family Church, giving him the name Devasahayam ("God is my help"); his godfather was the catechist Gnanaprakasam Pillai. The Holy See itself confirms Vadakkankulam as the place of this baptism, the single best-documented fact in the parish's whole history.
In English
"…he applied to Fr Bouttari, then occupied with the administration of Vadakencoulam. As the missionary foresaw the struggles and persecutions his noble catechumen would have to endure, he judged it necessary to defer the grace he so ardently desired; and, having tested him long, admitted him to the sacrament of regeneration, and gave him the name of Lazarus, or Deva-Sagayam."
What this source establishes
The earliest printed witness that the baptism happened HERE, from the mission's own documents. One honest note: Bertrand elsewhere says the martyr died "four years after his baptism", which with a 1752 martyrdom would give 1748, not 1745. The Vatican's date stands; Bertrand's arithmetic does not agree with it.
