1773–1775
The Jesuits suppressed; the old mission ends
In 1773 Pope Clement XIV suppressed the Society of Jesus throughout the world. The Jesuits who remained in Tinnevelly — here, at Talai, at Manapar — "died one by one," Caldwell records, and their places were supplied by priests from Goa. The last of the old Jesuit fathers here, Fr Clement Thomassini, felt his end approaching and had himself carried to Fr Antoine Douarte at Talai, where he died in 1775, aged seventy-five.
In English
"Feeling his end approach, he had himself carried to Talai, to Fr Antoine Douarte, and died in 1775, aged 75."
What this source establishes
The only primary witness to Fr Thomassini's death: he had himself carried to Talai, to Fr Antoine Douarte, and died THERE in 1775, aged seventy-five. Not at Vadakkankulam.
